Bucharest Postal Codes & Sectors Guide

Last updated: 2026-10-21

Bucharest is divided into six sectors (sectoare), and the postal code depends on the sector and on the street. If you are shipping to Bucharest or building an address form for Romanian customers, this guide explains the structure and the common pitfalls.

The six sectors

Bucharest postal codes start with 0. The second digit usually indicates the sector:

Sector Postal code range (examples) Known neighbourhoods
Sector 1 01xxxx Dorobanți, Băneasa, Aviatorilor, Primăverii, Piața Victoriei
Sector 2 02xxxx Obor, Pantelimon, Colentina, Iancului
Sector 3 03xxxx Vitan, Titan, Dristor, Balta Albă, Timpuri Noi
Sector 4 04xxxx Berceni, Tineretului, Apărătorii Patriei
Sector 5 05xxxx Cotroceni, Rahova, Ferentari, Eroilor
Sector 6 06xxxx Drumul Taberei, Militari, Crângași, Ghencea

The ranges above are a useful shortcut, but they are not the whole story. Within a sector, different streets and number ranges can have different codes. Always use the exact code for the street when you have it.

Why the sector matters

Two addresses that look similar can be in different sectors, with different postal codes and different delivery offices. A missing or wrong sector is one of the most common causes of delayed deliveries in Bucharest.

When you write a Bucharest address, include the sector on the city line:

Strada Ciurea nr. 12
021926 București, Sector 2
România

Neighbourhoods and sectors

Expats often know the neighbourhood name but not the sector. A few common mappings:

  • Dorobanți, Băneasa, Aviatorilor → Sector 1
  • Obor, Colentina, Pantelimon → Sector 2
  • Titan, Dristor, Vitan → Sector 3
  • Berceni, Tineretului → Sector 4
  • Cotroceni, Rahova → Sector 5
  • Drumul Taberei, Militari → Sector 6

These are practical guides, not official boundaries. For a specific address, search the street and number.

Finding the exact code

Use the search on our English homepage:

  1. type the street and number (e.g. Lalelelor 12);
  2. add the sector or city if the results are ambiguous;
  3. copy the six-digit code.

You can also browse the Bucharest city page for a sector-by-sector overview and links to the full Romanian locality pages.

For online stores and couriers

If you ship to Bucharest:

  • make the sector a required field, or derive it from the postal code;
  • validate the six-digit code at checkout;
  • allow the customer to enter the building, staircase and apartment — couriers need them;
  • do not accept a ZIP code or a five-digit code.

Our Romanian postal code API can validate and autocomplete Bucharest addresses in a single request.

Quick answers

  • How many digits does a Bucharest postal code have? Six.
  • Does it start with 0? Yes, Bucharest codes start with 0.
  • Is the sector in the postal code? Usually the second digit reflects the sector, but the full code is street-specific.
  • Do I need the sector if I have the postal code? The postal code is what couriers route by, but the sector helps humans and forms; include it when possible.
